After delivering an epic performance in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road, Oscar winner and expert wheel-woman Charlize Theron will be back in the driver’s seat, as she officially joins Fast 8, the next installment in Universal’s highly successful Fast and Furious franchise.
According to our friends at Variety, any details regarding Theron’s role are still unclear, but it looks like she’ll be playing some sort of villain. The studio went to her early for the role, but because of an unfinished script and her hectic production schedule, it took a while before her participation was finalized.
Fast 8 begins production this summer and is expected for an April 14, 2017 release. Franchise regulars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, and Michelle Rodriguez are confirmed to reprise their roles. F. Gary Gray, who previously worked with Theron in 2003’s The Italian Job, will take over the directorial chair, with Neil Moritz and Diesel producing the film.
As for now, Charlize Theron is set to appear in The Huntsman: Winter’s War, which premieres this month. She is also attached to an upcoming Sony spy thriller, The Grey Man, which is currently being delayed due to its script being rewritten for a female lead.
