Every year, almost everyone in America come together to witness the Super Bowl, the annual championship game of the National Football League (NFL). It is during this event where movie studios grab the opportunity to market their would-be blockbusters to the entire country in the form of one-minute trailers shown in between games.
For this year’s event, a total of 10 movie trailers were given the necessary boost in popularity. From the impressive sneak peek at the next Pirates of the Caribbean film to the breathtakingly intense teaser of The Fate of the Furious, take a gander at all the trailers that aired during the Super Bowl LI below.
Transformers: The Last Knight
The new trailer for the fifth Transformers movie is anything but unexciting. Michael Bay, who’s running the whole shebang for the last time, goes all out with the mayhem and destruction while adding some interesting strife between familiar characters in what looks like another blockbuster visual extravaganza. The Last Knight premieres June 23.
A Cure for Wellness
Gore Verbinski’s new pic might just be what every horror fan is looking for this year. The visionary director returns to the horror game with this chilling and unsettling psychological thriller that’s due on February 17.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales
While Jack Sparrow was nowhere to be found in the first trailer, the garrulous pirate finally shows up in today’s Big Game teaser, all covered in muck. The one-minute footage also gives us a glimpse of how evil and powerful his new adversary will be, with shots of a terrifying dead bird and a horde of dead pirates walking on water – all wrapped up in impressive special effects. DMTNT opens May 26.
Directed by Daniel Espinosa, this short clip is giving us some serious Alien vibes when a group of astronauts gets trapped in their space craft with a deadly organism from Mars. Packed with an awesome cast, the sci-fi thriller looks like it’s on its way to become a box office hit this year. Life lands on Earth on March 24.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
The galactic (and unlikely) band of heroes returns with the promise of more out-of-this-world adventures, hilarious banters, and super adorable Baby Groot sequences. The Guardians of the Galaxy sequel comes out May 5.
John Wick: Chapter 2
The short clip starts with the catch phrase “Slip into something a shade darker,” poking jokingly at its box office competition Fifty Shades Darker. Then a barrage of top-notch action sequences fills the remaining seconds as John Wick obliterates almost everyone standing on his way. Chapter 2 opens February 17.
Ghost in the Shell
Scarlett Johansson strips down, jumps off a building, and beats the living crap out of her enemies as an android law enforcement officer set in a futuristic city in Japan. Ghost in the Shell arrives March 31.
Hugh Jackman reprises his character – for the last time – as Wolverine, a role he’s held on for 17 years since X-Men in 2000. His final outing as the adamantium-clawed mutant looks dark, gritty, and full of unsparing carnage – a perfect send-off for one of the most formidable anti-heroes to ever grace the big screen. Logan open March 3.
The Fate of the Furious
So much testosterone in one minute! If the new Fast and Furious trailer didn’t get you all hyped up, then something is wrong with you. The Fate of the Furious returns April 14, upping the ante with even more insane and physics-defying acts of vehicular wizardry.
If it weren’t for the setting and the costume, this would’ve been easily mistaken as a 21 Jump Street film. The occasional one-liners and hilarious remarks prove that this Dwayne Johnson/Zac Efron-led action-comedy is NOTHING like the classic TV series its based from. Baywatch swims to theaters on May 26.
