First ‘Geostorm’ Trailer Brings Huge Tornadoes, Colossal Tsunamis, and More to Earth

Just when you think Hollywood has run out of ideas for another disaster movie, Warner Bros. and Skydance Productions went ahead and dropped the first trailer for Geostorm, the next big-budget disaster flick starring Gerard Butler.

The doom-laden film takes place in a world where satellites are now in control of the Earth’s weather after it has gone completely out of control. Things take a turn for the worse when these machines start acting up and eventually let loose a man-made storm that’s unlike anything the world has ever seen.

Caught up in all of this end-of-the-world frenzy is Butler’s scientist character Jake, who teams up with his brother Max (Jim Sturgess) to repair the climate-controlling satellites before it “wipes out everything and everyone along with it.”

Check out the trailer below.

Although it is not seen in the trailer, it’s been reported that part of the narrative will also involve Butler and Sturgess uncovering a plot to assassinate the President of the United States. Yes, someone wants to kill POTUS in the midst of a global catastrophe! How’s that for a sub-plot?

The film has been brewing since 2014 when it started production and was initially set for an October 2016 release. But when test screenings of the movie didn’t get the kind of love the studio had anticipated, Skydance reportedly ordered a staggering $15 million-worth of re-shoots just to get the film in tip-top shape. Will this get a much more positive response from the audience this time? We’ll find out when Geostorm hits theaters on October 20.

Independence Day and Stargate producer Dean Devlin marks his directorial debut with this feature film from a script written by Kieran and Michelle Mulroney. Abbie Cornish, Katheryn Winnick, Alexandra Lara, Amr Waked, Ed Harris and Andy García round out the rest of the casting docket.
