After playing as a villainous cyber-terrorist in the next Fast and Furious installment, Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron hops on to another high-octane action-thriller in the form of Universal Pictures’ Atomic Blonde, where a second trailer has just dropped this week.
Directed by David Leitch, the same guy who helmed the first John Wick movie and whose next project will be the upcoming Deadpool 2, the stylish spy film is based from the pages of Anthony Johnston’s graphic novel The Coldest City. Theron stars as Agent Lorraine Broughton, a lethal MI6 assassin sent to deliver a secret dossier in 1989 Berlin. There, she partners with embedded station chief David Percival (James McAvoy) to help her go through the deadliest game of conspiracies and espionage.
Take a look at the new trailer below.
Recently, Empire had a chance to talk to Leitch about the new trailer, and when asked about Theron’s training for the movie, this is what the director had to say:
Charlize was training for three months, for three-to-four hours, four days a week. She did a lot with our stunt team at 87Eleven [the same stunt team that got Keanu Reeves ready for the John Wick movies]. She was as good as anyone we’ve ever brought into that facility. We expanded the action sequences tremendously based on what she was able to do. Her dance background was helpful on that front, but mainly her work ethic… She wanted to deliver something that was provocative and worthy of an Academy Award-winner.
Talk about determination. If that doesn’t get you hyped up for the movie, then I don’t know what will.
In the fewest possible words, this is shaping up to be an action masterpiece! A flawlessly crafted action masterpiece that looks every bit stunning and beautifully shot – from the neon-drenched visuals all the way to its impressive action stunts.
And speaking of stunts, there’s an abundance of intense fight scenes on display in this brand-new footage that will definitely please those who are looking for an extremely enjoyable (and maybe violent) action flick. If there’s one thing we learned from Leitch, it’s that he really knows how to put up a good action sequence together. It’s basically why John Wick became such a good hit and is now one of the most memorable action films in recent years. With Atomic Blonde, he could bring in another cinematic icon with Theron, just as he did with Keanu Reeves in John Wick.
Atomic Blonde already premiered at SXSW last month to a generally positive reception from the audience and will soon hit theaters on July 28th. Sofia Boutella, John Goodman, Eddie Marsan, and Toby Jones round out the rest of the casting docket.
