Back in 1982, director Ridley Scott made a little sci-fi film called Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford. It’s about the story of Rick Deckard (Ford) who was tasked to hunt down four recently escaped replicants. But when he met and ultimately fell in love with an advanced replicant, he began to question his, as well as the replicants’, benevolence. Up until this point, the film has been heralded by many as one of the best features in the annals of science fiction.
Fast forward to 35 years later, Scott’s critically acclaimed film now has a sequel coming, and Sony Pictures just dropped the first official trailer for it. Futuristically titled Blade Runner 2049, the highly anticipated follow-up is expected to bow down in US theaters in five months’ time.
Oscar-nominated filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Sicario) directs the sequel which stars Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Robin Wright, and Harrison Ford, who’s reprising his character as Deckard from the 1982 iconic film. The visually impressive preview, which came after a lengthy Facebook Live discussion with Ford, Gosling, and Villeneuve, features more of Gosling and Ford’s character, as well as our first glimpse of Wright as a police head chief and Leto’s mysterious (and possibly villainous) character.
This first footage doesn’t really give away much about the overall plot of the sequel. Instead, it gives us a sufficient look at how visually resplendent Villenueve’s upcoming feature will be. And if this 2-minute, neon-lit preview is any indication, it looks like 2049 is going to be the one of the most spectacular sci-fi films of this year.
Blade Runner 2049 also stars Dave Bautista, Ana de Armas, Mackenzie Davis, Barkhad Abdi, Sylvia Hoeks, Carla Juri, David Dastmalchian, and Lennie James. It opens October 6th.
