Every once in a while, you encounter a film that’s straight up strange and out of this world, and that you cant help but be delighted and engrossed by its sheer oddity. Well, this year, it looks like we’ll be up for that kind of experience with Colossal.
Directed by Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes, Open Windows), this monster pic sees a totally different take on the genre as it cleverly mixes sci-fi and comedy with a much more personal touch, making it a relevant creature feature. The film stars Anne Hathaway, Jason Sudeikis, Dan Stevens, and Tim Blake Nelson.
The story revolves around a no-good drunkard woman named Gloria (Hathaway) who goes back to her hometown after getting kicked out of her job and her apartment. There she reunites with an old friend (Sudeikis) and eventually falls back to her old, destructive habits over time. On the other side of the globe, a giant Kaiju monster suddenly comes out of nowhere in South Korea, causing destruction everywhere it goes. Upon seeing the news, Gloria’s life gets turned upside down when she realizes that she shares a psychic connection with the colossal creature.

The film already premiered last year at Fantastic Fest to a positive reception from the audience. They praised about how good the film is, in spite of its unusual concept. The feature was also lauded for using the Kaiju monster as an unexpected symbol for being an alcoholic. Now that’s something you don’t get to see everyday.
Colossal is slated for release in US theaters on April 7, 2017.
