‘Shaun of the Dead’ Director Edgar Wright Returns to Form in First ‘Baby Driver’ Trailer

If you’re familiar with the name Edgar Wright, then it’s probably because you’ve seen some, if not all, of his terrific projects – which include the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The World’s End) and the equally rollicking Scott Pilgrim vs. The World – or you might’ve heard of him when he had a falling out with Marvel, causing him to exit Ant-Man. Either way, the English filmmaker is back on the road with a brand new film titled Baby Driver, and a thrilling first trailer to boot.

Ansel Elgort (The Fault in Our Stars, Divergent) headlines the action-packed American caper story alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names – Lily James, Jon Bernthal, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, and Kevin Spacey.

Elgort plays the role of Baby, the titular getaway speedster who, after a traumatic accident when he was young, suffers from a hearing condition that triggers a constant ringing sound resonating in his ears. To put an end to this agony, he makes use of his awesome personal soundtrack to drown out the sounds. Now it has been reported that much of the film’s action sequences will be choreographed around the music that Elgort’s listening, so this should be an exciting ride (pun intended) to watch.

There are so many things to be loved in this trailer. First off, the film looks to be like another ingenious and clever piece of work from Wright, even if it feels somewhat different from what we’ve been accustomed to seeing from the director. Then we have Ansel Elgort, who seems to have matured from his YA days and is now front and center of an action film that feels like a great role for the actor. The action sequences are also a welcome addition to the film’s good points, with some of the car scenes giving us some major Fast and Furious vibes. Overall, this appears to be an exhilarating film, and one that could put Wright back on the market as one of the most exciting filmmakers of our time.

Baby Driver has already made its debut at SXSW earlier today to a positive reception from the audience, and will make its way to US theaters on August 11th.
