‘Blade Runner 2049’ First Reactions Call the Film ‘Breathtaking’ and a ‘Sci-Fi Masterpiece’

Those who are still skeptical about the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 can finally rest easy. The first wave of reactions from critics are here, and they’re all about praising director Denis Villeneuve’s latest sci-fi masterpiece.

The highly anticipated film takes place 30 years after the events of Ridley Scott’s 1982 original. Ryan Gosling stars as Officer K, a new blade runner for the Los Angeles Police Department who discovers a dark secret that could bring humanity to its knees. His discovery puts him on a mission to find Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford), a former blade runner who went missing for 30 years.

Blade Runner 2049 isn’t due in theaters until October 6, but a handful of people were lucky enough to join the press screening of the film last Tuesday. Words such as “sci-fi masterpiece,” “breathtaking,” and “mind-blowing” were thrown around in the mix as they share their short reviews on Twitter.

Check out the rest of their reactions below.

Villeneuve previously worked with another sci-fi film, Arrival, which earned him a Best Director Oscar nomination early this year. His other projects – Sicario and Prisoners – were also critical and commercial hits. So it doesn’t really come as a shock that Blade Runner 2049 is already off to a marvelous start. If anything, it only secures Villeneuve’s spot as one of the most exciting filmmakers in Hollywood right now.
