Universal and Legendary Pictures have released a brand new trailer for The Great Wall after making its debut at the New York Comic Con event this year.
Touted as the most expensive film shot in China, this fantasy epic is directed by visionary filmmaker Zhang Yimou (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) and stars global superstar Matt Damon in one of the lead roles.
Set many years ago in medieval China, the movie tells the story behind why the famous Great Wall of China was built in the firt place – to keep hordes of terrifying creatures from getting in.
Recently, the film received some backlash for casting a white guy as the hero of what is clearly a Chinese movie. However, director Yimou made it clear that Damon is not playing the role intended for a Chinese actor.
Matt Damon is not playing a role that was originally conceived for a Chinese actor. The arrival of his character in our story is an important plot point. There are five major heroes in our story and he is one of them — the other four are all Chinese. The collective struggle and sacrifice of these heroes are the emotional heart of our film.
Based from what we’ve seen from this trailer, it looks like Damon’s character is placed on equal footing with all the other Chinese actors.
The Great Wall also stars Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe, Hanyu Zhang, Eddie Peng, Lu Han, Kenny Lin, Junkai Wang, Zheng Kai, Cheney Chen, Xuan Huang, and Andy Lau. It is scheduled for release in US theaters on February 17, 2017.
