Entertainment Weekly just dropped a new image from Gal Gadot’s highly anticipated Wonder Woman movie. Joining her in this image are Diana’s mother, Queen Hippolyta (Connie Nielsen), and her two military aunts, General Antiope (Robin Wright) and Antiope’s lieutenant, Menalippe (Lisa Loven Kongsli).
These three Amazon women are responsible for raising and training Diana into becoming the greatest female warrior of all time. However, they don’t always agree with one another. As a revolutionary leader, Hippolyta wants to protect her daughter from the outside world, but Antiope wants to prepare her.
“She is the only child they raised together,” says director Patty Jenkins (Monster), adding, “And their love for her manifests in a different way for each of them.”
As for creating Themyscira, the birthplace of Wonder Woman, Jenkins and her team used exotic locations off the coasts of Italy and southern China to increase the otherworldliness of scenes filmed on the Amalfi coast in Italy.
With regards to how the Amazons look, Jenkins and Lindy Hemming (The Dark Knight) crafted outfits that showed off the women’s ripped shoulders and toned legs, a look that’s practical but still within the realm of the comic book. “I, as a woman, want Wonder Woman to be hot as hell, fight bad-ass, and look great at the same time—the same way men want Superman to have huge pecs and an impractically big body. That makes them feel like the hero they want to be. And my hero, in my head, has really long legs.”
Wonder Woman is expected to debut in US theaters on June 23, 2017.
