Meryl Streep Reunites with Emily Blunt for ‘Mary Poppins Returns’

The upcoming musical sequel Mary Poppins Returns is the next project of Chicago and Into the Woods director Rob Marshall, and stars Emily Blunt and Hamilton‘s Lin Manuel-Miranda.

And now it looks like the star power is getting stronger, as Variety reports that Oscar-winning actress Meryl Streep is in final talks to join the cast.

Streep is said to play the role of Poppin’s cousin Topsy, a character not present in the classic 1964 adaptation. In this film, “the story will take place in Depression-era London (when the books were originally written) and follows a now-grown Jane and Michael Banks, who, along with Michael’s three children, are visited by the enigmatic Mary Poppins (Blunt) following a personal loss. Through her unique magical skills, and with the aid of her friend Jack (Miranda), she helps the family rediscover the joy and wonder missing in their lives.”

Streep previously worked with Marshall and Blunt in 2014’s Into the Woods, while Streep and Blunt also shared the same screen in 2006’s The Devil Wears Prada.

Streep will be next seen in Florence Foster Jenkins, which hits theaters on August 21.
