New ‘Valerian’ Trailer Promises a Dazzling Sci-Fi Epic Unlike Anything We’ve Ever Seen

In a time when mega-blockbusters are dominated by action sequels, superhero adaptations/follow-ups, or films that hope to breathe new life to dying franchises, it’s pretty understandable why Luc Besson’s upcoming sci-fi pic Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets would slip under anyone’s radar. Apart from the first trailer that debuted four months ago, there really hasn’t been anything going on in terms of promoting the film.

But just within the week, EuropaCorp dropped a brand new footage for the movie, and oh my god it is insanely gorgeous! Much like the first trailer, this second preview offers even more stunning special effects and a creative imagination that looks and feels totally different from any other movie coming out this year.

Adapted from the long-running classic graphic novel series Valérian and Laureline, the film stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne as “special operatives for the government of the human territories charged with maintaining order throughout the universe.” However, when an unexpected force tries to destroy all that was created in the intergalactic city of Alpha, they are sent on a perilous mission to find and eliminate the perpetrator of this heinous crime.

See the impressive new trailer below.

Besson is no stranger to the sci-fi genre as his two previous efforts – 1997’s The Fifth Element and 2014’s Lucy – were also equally thrilling and greatly inspired features at the time. But with Valerian though, the stakes are much higher for the visionary director, especially since it amounted to a whopping $180 million to put the film in tip-top shape. He surely has his work cut out for him with this adaptation. Nonetheless, given his track record, we’re certain that this will be a hit with the audience when it opens on July 21st.

Valerian also stars Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, John Goodman, Herbie Hancock and Kris Wu.
