Dave Franco Fights His Own Father in ‘The Lego Ninjago Movie’ Trailer

Warner Bros. is expanding its Lego universe with another hilarious meta-nudging “block”-buster.

Perfectly timed with this week’s release of The Lego Movie‘s first spin-off, The Lego Batman Movie, the studio dropped the first trailer for its next animated feature: The Lego Ninjago Movie. And if this footage is any indication, it looks like we’ll be laughing our hearts out for the third time.

Tron: Uprising director and animation extraordinaire Charlie Been directs the blocky pic from a script penned by Hilary Winston, Bob Logan, and Paul Fisher.

The film follows the Ninjago world being attacked by the nefarious Lord Garmadon (Justin Theroux) who also carries the moniker as the Worst Guy Ever. His intent to conquer the city calls Lloyd (Dave Franco) – aka the Green Ninja AND Garmadon’s son – into action as the evil warlord continues to level cities and attack innocent people. Together with some of his friends, they form a special squad of ninjas under the guidance of Master Wu (Jackie Chan) in defeating the despicable lord.

Take a look at the hilarious trailer below.

Based from this first trailer, it looks like the new addition to the The Lego Movie universe is continuing the same silly side-splitting nature of its predecessors, as referenced by a copious amount of bad parenting jokes from Theroux and sarcastic remarks from Chan. Dave Franco, much like Chris Pratt in the first film, is also amusing and funny as the film’s main protagonist, while Theroux looks like a perfect pick for the villain. Here’s hoping that this one will be on the same fun level as with the other two Lego movies.

Aside from the previously named cast, Fred Armisen, Abbi Jacobson, Olivia Munn, Kumail Nanjiani, Michael Peña, and Zach Woods round out the rest of the voice cast.

The Lego Ninjago Movie assembles September 22 in US theaters.

    • It’s amazing how the critics are embracing this franchise. Have you seen the ratings for Lego and Batman? Craaazy!

  • These Lego movies are hilarious! I’ve recently watched the Lego Batman movie with my friends. I really thought it was stupid at first when I watched the trailer, but I actually enjoyed when I finally watched it. Looking forward to this one. 🙂

  • Wow. I haven’t seen the first Lego movie and honestly, I’m not sure if I am interested to see it. Maybe my daughter will like it even if she doesn’t really play with her blocks a lot…perhaps seeing the movie will spark interest?
