After starring in the 2016 underwhelming action thriller Jack Reacher: Never Back Down, Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise shifts into the horror genre with Universal’s present-day reboot of The Mummy. And if this exciting new trailer is any indication, it looks like we’ll a hefty amount of intense action sequences and top-quality suspense all in one flick.
The pic gives a mature take on its plot compared to the 1999 Brendan Fraser-led version, as Nick Morton (Cruise) and a group of paramilitary archaeologists stumble on a forbidden place in the desert and unknowingly set loose an ancient powerful force (Sofia Boutella) on Earth. Morton must then do everything in his power to put the monster back in its tomb before it causes any more devastation than it already has on the modern world.
While the first trailer focuses more on the horror element of the film, the newly released footage puts Cruise’s superb action stunts front and center this time. Whatever we said before about the film being a true-blue horror pic, we take it back. Because judging from this preview, it’s obvious that this is going to be one part horror movie, one part Mission: Impossible. And we’re still fine with that.
Directed by Star Trek into Darkness writer Alex Kurtzman from a script penned by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus, Doctor Strange) and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation director Christopher McQuarrie, this horror remake is intended to kick-start Universal’s very own shared movie universe of some of its well-known monsters that include Boutella’s Mummy, The Wolfman, Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, Count Dracula (not the 2014 Luke Evans-fronted movie), and the recently announced Creature from the Black Lagoon. But of course, this would all depend on how The Mummy fares first in the box office before all the other monsters get their own standalone features.
This soon-to-be blockbuster romp, which is expected to bow down June 9, also stars Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson, and Courtney B. Vance.
