After the hugely successful disaster flick San Andreas obliterated the box office last 2015, director Brad Peyton continues his love for destruction and mayhem by signing up for the sequel AND re-teaming with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for a live-action adaptation of the classic video game Rampage.
For those who aren’t familiar with the game, it is an 80s Midway Arcade title that features three horribly mutated creatures in an experiment gone awry. These monsters – a gorilla, a crocodile, and a wolf – are controlled by the player and must completely destroy a particular city in order to win the round.
Peyton, together with screenwriters Carlton Cuse (San Andreas) and Ryan Condal (Hercules), are working on how to go around the plot of the film, especially since it’s not really heavy on the story. Speaking with We Got This Covered earlier this week, here’s what the director has to say on how they’re going to approach the film:
With Rampage, we are using our love of the original game as our inspiration. Then we’re going to build a movie, like San Andreas, that is really going to surprise people in what it delivers. It’s going to be a lot more emotional, a lot scarier and a lot more real than you’d expect. So you look at that original concept about a lab that affects these animals and makes them rampage, and that’s the nugget.
The director has also confirmed the involvement of the three monsters, saying:
There’s the three, the lizard, the ape and the wolf, so we’re keeping it similar, but you’ll have to stay tuned to find out where we’re going with this.
In truth, I did enjoy watching San Andreas and have always been a huge fan of monster films, so this news has actually got me thrilled. However, as much I love how Peyton and his team are moving forward with this, it’s difficult to put so much trust on the film at this point. Majority of the video game adaptations that have come before it have been a huge disappointment, so I cant help but wonder if Rampage is going to follow suit.
Do you think Rampage is going to be a kickass film? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the comments below. And stay tuned for more updates about this film soon.
