New ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Trailer Hints at an Epic Clash Between Humans and Apes

“There are times when it is necessary to abandon our humanity to save humanity,” says a shaven Woody Harrelson in front of a military troop in the dark new trailer for 20th Century Fox’s upcoming summer tentpole War for the Planet of the Apes.

The film, which is the third installment in the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise following Rise and Dawn, picks up two years after the events that took place in Dawn where the irreparable relationship between humans and apes continues to deteriorate with each passing chapter. This time, Caesar’s (Andy Serkis) challenger is Colonel (Harrelson), a cold-blooded leader of a special military group hell-bent on eradicating these genetically enhanced primates. The two are pitted against each other in an ultimate all-out war that would hopefully put an end to their long-standing conflict once and for all.

Much like the first trailer, this brand new preview promises to offer another stunning sci-fi spectacle from Dawn director Matt Reeves, and one that’s much darker and menacing that its predecessors. Even from the start of the trailer, one can already sense how epic this film is going to be. We can probably expect a lot of human-ape encounters along the way with some resulting in tragic consequences not just on Caesar’s side, but also on the Colonel’s group.

As with Rise and Dawn, War also boasts an abundance of exceptional visual effects worthy of an Oscar nod. Its top-notch motion-capture technology of bringing Caesar and the apes to life looks jaw-droppingly incredible, and together with what feels like a solid narrative, this franchise could very well go down as one of the best sci-fi series in today’s world. We’re absolutely thrilled to see this film when it roars to the theaters on July 14.

War for the Planet of the Apes also stars Steve Zahn, Amiah Miller, Karin Konoval, Judy Greer, and Terry Notary.
